Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates today urged the Labour-Plaid Assembly
Government in the chamber to provide more education to young
children in schools on the importance of using locally sourced
foods.
Mick Bates AM: “It was recently announced that cookery classes in
England will be compulsory for 11-14 year olds from 2011. This is
something that should be replicated across Wales. It could include
education to raise awareness amongst our children in schools across
Wales of the importance of using locally sourced food.
“I was pleased to meet young Scouts in the Senedd yesterday who are
working to promote healthy living through outdoor activities and
healthy eating. It is always wonderful to see young people in Wales
so aware of the importance of a sustainable and healthy lifestyle.
“Children often participate in campaigns on recycling. Another
important campaign is the use of locally sourced food. This can have
a positive impact on behavioural change, as well as a positive
effect on our environment, by reducing food miles and providing many
benefits to our local economies.”
