Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates launched a competition in the Welsh
Assembly this week as part of a ‘Bright Green Intelligent
Sustainability’ event, which celebrates the work of companies that
have developed an entirely new approach to manufacturing and
sustainable development.
Joinery manufacturers from across Wales took part in the event and
received awards for developing the ‘Bright Green’ approach. This
innovative approach allows every company and every product going
into public and private sector housing programmes to be measured to
assess their impact on the Welsh economy and on the environment.
Mick Bates launched an exciting competition which invites secondary
schools to test the ‘Bright Green’ standard and work with
timber-frame manufacturers on the design of affordable housing.
Honoured to be launching the competition Mick Bates said: “I believe
it is important to involve young people in such a vital aspect of
their future lives. The competition will encourage young people to
be more aware of the issues and challenges that we must face if we
are to achieve a truly sustainable future.”
The competition is intended to construct thoughtful dialogues
between manufacturers/designers of housing and the young people who
will soon enough be their occupants. The designs will balance
economic, environmental and social objectives and offer the prospect
of decent homes and a good quality of life for young people.
Commenting on the event Mick said: “Sustainable housing is extremely
important particularly across rural Wales. I would like to
congratulate Montgomeryshire companies J.Richardson Design and Build
and Jones and Co who have received the ‘Bright Green’ benchmark
award for sustainable production – their hard work is truly
appreciated and the award is well deserved.”
