Welsh Lib Dem farming spokesperson Mick Bates AM will today call on
the Government to consider an interim support scheme for hill
farmers facing financial devastation as a result of two
Foot-and-Mouth outbreaks in England.
Mick Bates said: “To have one outbreak may be regarded as
unfortunate: to have two looks like carelessness.
“As a result, thousands of Welsh farmers can’t move their livestock.
At a crucial time for hill farmers, we have seen a real depression
in lamb prices.
“I want the Government to consider interim financial support and
buying some of the lambs from hill farmers whilst they are facing
financial ruin.
“I want the Government to provide as much support as possible, for
example the early payment of the Single Farm Payment.
“I hope the Minister will consider support, and understands not just
the massive psychological impact, but the economic impact of the
Foot-and-Mouth crisis threatens a great many Welsh family farms.”
