Carno Station Action Group have descended in force on the Senedd
today to hear the Minister for Economy and Transport scrutinised by
the Enterprise and Learning Committee on his response to their
recommendations. Montgomeryshire AM Mick Bates has been in support
of the campaign to re-open Carno railway station as it has
progressed down the line under the new Assembly petitions procedure.
“The campaign to re-open Carno train station is something that I
strongly support. I am pleased that the Carno action group have
travelled here today to hear the scrutiny of the Minister – this
petition is a hugely important issue to the local community and
their journey here today is a clear reflection of that.

“I believe that the Carno petition is extremely valuable to our
local area – railways should serve communities and the re-opening of
Carno station is key to the regeneration of the local community at
Carno. Not only would it be hugely beneficial to the local economy,
but it would also increase access to jobs, shops, hospitals, leisure
facilities, friends & relatives.
“The petition highlights the importance of improving the rail
service in large rural areas and emphasises the need to build a
sustainable network of public transport across our most isolated
areas in Mid Wales. Sustainability is a principle which lies at the
heart of our Assembly and this petition is a great opportunity to
put our principles into action.
“I am pleased to see democracy at work in the Assembly. However we
need to see real commitment from the Labour-Plaid Government to
match this and not a continued neglect for the heart of Wales.
“The Minister today assured the Committee and people of Carno that
retaining the loop in Talerddig will not prejudice the potential
opening of a station at Carno in the future. We need our communities
to be well-served by a strong public transport network and Carno is
a clear choice for a new station on the Cambrian Line. I wish the
Carno action group luck and I will continue to back their campaign
when the business case for the station is presented.”
