Mick Bates, Welsh Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Farming,
welcomes the announcement today by the Minister for Rural Affairs
that the 20 day standstill rule is to be lifted as of October 17th:
“This is a step in the right direction. Foot and mouth has
devastated the farming industry in Wales and the 20 day standstill
rule has caused havoc amongst farmers.
“I welcome this statement by the Minister today. The 20 day movement
restriction will revert back to 6 days and this will greatly assist
farmers who will be able to resume trading more freely.
“I sincerely hope that the Welsh livestock industry can finally
start to recover and that this decision has not come too late for
farmers in Wales.
“As the export market re-opens from tomorrow, I look forward to the
resumption of normal export rules so that buyers can purchase in
live markets and collection centres.”
