Mick Bates AM, Welsh Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for the
Environment, today criticised the Plaid-Labour Government over the
lack of progress made towards reaching renewable energy targets in
Wales:
“Carbon reduction is a key driver in combating climate change.
Recent figures have shown Wales is the highest emitter of CO2 in the
UK and around the 12th highest emitter per capita in the world.
“We are around 70% behind our target of producing 10% renewable
energy by 2010. This is a reality check – clearly we need stronger
policies now to tackle climate change.
“Given these figures and our Tan 8 policy to hit 4TW renewable
energy production by 2010, the Plaid-Labour Assembly Government need
to take urgent action and develop policies now, in order to make
progress on reaching these targets.”
Responding to the Minister’s statement that an ‘Energy Route Map for
Wales’ would soon be published and comments would be welcomed, Mick
again emphasised the need for less talk and more action:
“We are 70% behind our target for producing renewable energy – 70%
more energy needs to be generated from renewable sources. The
industry is crying out for support, yet today the Minister cannot
give a clear answer on how we will reach these targets.”
