All six Welsh Liberal Democrats AMs return to the Assembly this
week following the first Welsh General Election.
On a night where Labour saw their vote slump, but lost very few
seats, the Welsh Liberal Democrats held all three constituency
seats with comfort.
And in addition to retaining three regional list seats, the
party picked up a handful of strong second places in Newport East,
Swansea West, Swansea East and Pontypridd, and narrowly missed out
on additional list seats.
The new Assembly meets for the first time on Wednesday 9th of
May to elect a Presiding Officer and Deputy.
A joint statement from the National Executive Committee of the
Welsh Liberal Democrats, and the Assembly Group:
Rob Humphries, chairman of the National Executive Committee, and
Mike German, leader of the Assembly Group said:
"The National Executive and the Assembly Group have reflected on
the election result and the implications for the people of Wales,
our party and the good governance of Wales."
"Today′s meeting was a preliminary meeting and we will reflect
further over the bank holiday.
"All parties are a ′minority′ in the new Assembly. The same
challenges face all parties.
"We have agreed to look at the options and the challenges and of
course, Mike German and his Assembly colleagues will be discussing
these challenges with the other party representatives in the
Assembly.
"We will act responsibly. Stability is important to the next
government of Wales."
