A
change of government is the only hope now for Welsh farmers – that’s the
message from Welsh Liberal Democrat AM Mick Bates.
Mr Bates
was speaking as AMs met at the National Botanical Gardens to discuss the
future of the Tir Mynydd scheme which supports hill farmers in Wales.
Mick Bates said: “The
Labour Party do not understand the vital importance of these Tir Mynydd
payments not only to the survival of farming families, but to rural
communities and even the Welsh language in some parts of the country.
“The Labour Assembly
Government has no intention of restoring cuts made to the 2007 payments
despite the best efforts of the opposition parties. The best hope for
farmers is for a new government after the May elections.
“The Welsh Liberal
Democrats believe that support payments to Welsh hill farmers provide
one of the most sustainable and environmentally friendly ways of
protecting Welsh farming and the countryside.
“In committee, and in
the Assembly plenary, we will vote to restore the maximum amount of
money to Tir Mynydd.”
Kirsty Williams, AM for
Brecon and Radnorshire added: "We have put in an impossible position by
Plaid Cymru capitulating over their grubby deal to pass Labour′s budget
cuts. They have forced us in to a situation where we are robbing Peter
to pay Paul. We have to take money from environmental schemes to
reinstate the money for Tir Mynydd. It is a shame they didn′t think
about the farmers when they were cosying up to the Labour Party."
