Today Montgomeryshire
farmer and Welsh Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson Mick Bates
challenged First Minister Rhodri Morgan to help reduce food miles.
Commenting Mick said: “I am
so glad that Rhodri Morgan is finally supporting the goals of the
Sustainable Supermarkets Forum. The Forum, sponsored by the Wales
Consumer Council, encourages supermarkets to sell local produce.
“I think
we must promote local food proofing at supermarkets. It will consist of
stores showing how much local food has been purchased on receipts. Local
food proofing will encourage supermarkets to compete with one another to
see who is selling the most local food, thus reducing food miles and
helping the environment.
Mick
added: “Local food proofing will also show shoppers just how much
support they are giving our Welsh farmers and food producers. If they
see a receipt that says that only 20% of their purchases were locally
procured they will surely want to improve that percentage.
“Local
food is fresher, healthier and of a finer quality. Let’s help our
environment and support our farmers by buying local products!”
