Mick
Bates used the first opportunity to question Carwyn Jones in 2006 to
slam his plans to tackle Bovine TB in Wales.
Speaking in the Assembly today, the Welsh Liberal Democrat
Countryside Minister accused the Minister of "failing to listen to
the needs of farmers in Wales".
Commenting after Countryside Questions, Mick said: "When Carwyn
Jones announced the Labour Government's plans to deal with TB in
cattle I, like many others, was very disappointed.
"The
plans fail to mention the use of 'intensive treatment areas'. They
also fail to make a commitment to the culling of wildlife. This is
despite the advice of farmers, unions, vets and farming AMs.
"Bovine TB is increasing at a rate of 18% each year. It has the
potential to severally damage our rural economy. I am ashamed that
after raising expectations the government has failed to take this
treat seriously. He is more concerned with making a populist
decision that will protect some forms of wildlife, whilst neglecting
to protect animals on the farm."
In a
meeting of the Assembly's Environment, Planning and Countryside
committee tomorrow, Mick vowed to increase the pressure on the
Minister about his TB plans.
"I
am looking forward to asking the Minister to justify his decision
and explain to Welsh farmers why he is allowing measures that may
damage their livelihood to go ahead."
