Mick Bates has slammed four UK energy companies for putting people in
debt.
British Gas, Scottish Power,
Npower and Powergen currently peruse the practice of collecting back
charges from consumers who have not had their token electricity
prepayment meters recalibrated. It is a move which threatens 240,000
households across Wales.
Commenting
Mick said: “It is quite simply ridiculous that this is allowed to
happen. This winter it is estimated that 260,000 people will be in fuel
poverty. They should not have to put up with back charges. Many
households will face a £150 debt when their meters are recalibrated, a
debt which could cripple household finances this winter.
“Not all
companies do this. I congratulate SWALEC and EDF who do not pursue this
unfair practice, but only charge customers when their meters have been
recalibrated.
“We need
to stamp out fuel poverty. This can only be done with the help of the
energy providers. I hope British Gas, Scottish Power, Npower and
Powergen will follow the example of SWALEC and EDF and cut their policy
of back charging.”
