Speaking ahead of
widely-respected environmentalist Sir Jonathon Porritt’s visit to Wales
tomorrow, NASEG chairman Mick Bates has challenged Assembly Ministers to
do three simple things to make Wales greener.
Mr Bates, AM for
Montgomeryshire, said: “The Assembly has a legal duty to sustainable
development, but despite the growing appetite for green action, Labour’s
Assembly Ministers have been slow to turn words in to action.
“I know
Jonathon Porritt will give a challenging talk tomorrow night – urging
Wales to go further and faster. I want Wales’ Assembly Ministers to go
the extra mile for a Greener Wales.”
Mr Bates,
spokesperson on the environment for the Welsh Liberal Democrats, added:
“I want to see Ministers giving a lead on this. If each Minister could
come up with three simple steps to reduce carbon emissions and slow down
climate change, then Wales’s total impact on the environment would be
greatly reduced. They have the influence to make a difference.
“I will
make it my aim in the run up to Christmas to challenge each minister to
do their bit for a Greener Wales.”
Mick Bates
will be putting questions to each of the Assembly Ministers over the
coming weeks challenging them to take direct action for a greener Wales.
Notes:
Sir Jonathon Porritt, founder Director of Forum for the Future, and
Chairman of the UK Sustainable Development Commission will give the Phil
Williams Memorial lecture on Wednesday. (Flyer below.)
The lecture, entitled – Getting Serious about Sustainable Energy in
Wales and the World – will take place at 6.30pm in the Main Hall at
University of Glamorgan Business School.
Assembly Members Mick Bates and Prof Phil Williams co-founded the
National Assembly’s cross-part group on Sustainable Energy (NASEG) in
1999.
Prof Williams died in June 2003 and NASEG organises an annual lecture in
his memory.
The inaugural event was addressed by Sir John Houghton at Aberystwyth
University.
