Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Montgomeryshire, Mick Bates has
today voted in favour of a motion that would stop university top-up
fees being introduced in Wales.
The motion was carried by 30 votes to 29, defeating the Labour
Assembly Government.
“During the recent General Election campaign I spoke to many
students who told me that they were voting Liberal Democrat as they
agreed with our opposition to top-up fees.
“I am glad that I and my fellow Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly
Members have this opportunity to keep our promise to the students of
Wales and oppose top-up fees.
“I believe in the principle of free education for all. As someone
who comes from a poor background I fully appreciate the value of
free education. Burdening young people with debt is something I
will never tolerate.
“Today’s vote has meant that a university fee free Wales is getting
closer and closer.”
