The Labour Assembly Government must make sure Wales does not rely on
nuclear power for its energy needs, says Welsh Liberal Democrat
environment spokesperson Mick Bates.
Mr Bates challenged First Minister Rhodri Morgan on the issue
today.
Mr Bates said: “The Assembly Government has a commitment to produce
10% of its energy by renewable sources by 2010. As this date draws
closer it is becoming more and more clear that this target is going
to be difficult to reach.
“The government may be faced with the option of opening more
unpopular nuclear power stations to reach our energy needs. This is
simply unacceptable.
“The Government must make it clear that their commitment to
renewables is still strong.
“If Wales had primary law making powers we would have more options
in producing clean renewable energy.
“Labour needs to secure more power for
Wales
so we can produce our own clean power.”
